" HOPE FOR HARPER"
Harper was recently diagnosed with Blastomycosis. If you are not familiar with Blastomycosis, it is a fungus that lives in the soil. Blastomycosis can be deadly to dogs who are infected. Early recognition is key the to survival, but because initial symptoms are similar to other, less threatening conditions, it can be easily misdiagnosed.
In Harper's case the first sign was an eye infection, accompanied by high fever. Treated as a virus, Harper's condition continued to worsen. Over the course of 5 days, the infected left eye swelled and eventually ruptured. Harper's Canine Ophthalmologiat diagnosed Blastomycosis.
With appropriate treatment, Harper is going to be OK. However, he faces surgery for the removal of his eye. Additionally, Harper is on a very expensive antifungal medication, Itraconizole. He will need to stay on it for up to 6 months, or until he test negative for Blastomycosis. At 7.50 a pill, curing Harper will be costly.
